Potosi, Bolivia, cob 8 reales, 1648R, extremely rare. 27.99 grams. Only the second example we have seen, the first one sold in our Auction #15 for over $9,500(!), this one with clear assayer and date despite typically crude strike that renders the shield and crown half flat, the cross better (full) but with distracting dark patches (possibly due to debasement), hairline edge-split, Fine overall. Like the last two lots, all of which should have been melted down in 1649-52, this coin is strangely overweight. It is also worth mentioning that this assayer R, Felipe Ramirez de Arellano, was summarily executed for his role in the debasement scandal at the Potosi mint.
