Potosi, Bolivia, cob 1/4 real, Philip IV, no assayer or mintmark, small lion, late castle, extremely rare. Janson-unl. 0.56 gram. The key to this coin is the checkerboard-like castle (inside a shield), which matches the style of post-1629 assayer T and is therefore decidedly Philip IV, one whole reign past what Sellschopp thought should not exist in the first place. Interestingly, traces of a crown can be seen above it, whereas the small lion on the reverse is inside a border of large dots without any crown. Thin from salvage but with VF details and nicely toned. Possibly unique. Pedigreed to our Auction #4, lot #714.
