Pennsylvania, 20 shillings, March 20, 1771, serial 3266, plate A, Declaration signer Francis Hopkinson signature, PMG VF 25. Fr-PA-148. Francis Hopkinson (Sept. 21, 1737 to May 9, 1791) was an author, designer, and civil servant who represented New Jersey at the Second Continental Congress where he signed the Declaration of Independence. His signature, much like how it appears on the Declaration, is in the middle of the three signatures on the obverse. Hopkinson is also notable for having designed the first official American flag in his service on the Navy Board. He also designed the $40 Continental Currency note and, by extension, the first American coinage, the Nova Constellatio coins. Colonial notes signed by Declaration signers are always popular, especially being in as high of a grade as this note. Boldly inked with clear pen serial and signatures, wide top margin with some minor stains (as noted by PMG). PMG #8059652-001. Pedigreed to the Henry D. Osborne collection.
