Pair of matched metal (likely brass) luggage tags numbered 1462 on leather strap, ex-S.S. Central America (1857). 17 grams total. 5½" long. Somewhat fragile and corroded from exposure to the water, the dark-brown leather stiff. These tags still bear the inscriptions of NY to SAN Fo, 1462, via Panama, with perhaps some old repair to the back of one, certified as being recovered in 2014 from the Interior Forward Area. From the S.S. Central America (1857), pedigreed to the Holabird auction of March 2023 (lot 1074), with original certificate signed by Holabird and Bob Evans.
