PUERTO RICO (under Spain), peseta (quarter dollar), Alfonso XIII, fleur-de-lis countermark (1884) on a Mexico City, Mexico, bust 2 reales, Charles IV, 1803 FT, very rare, NGC VF 20, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Hubbard. KM-unl. Full and clear countermark in front of king's neck, the host deeply rainbow toned but unusually problem-free (particularly the lack of a hole), unlisted as a Mexican bust host and the first we have seen with this date. The fleur-de-lis countermark was Puerto Rico's only official countermark, applied to show that a given coin was on the island before a November 27, 1884, decree by Governor General Luis Daban preventing the importation of damaged coins (mostly holed). Pedigreed to the Clyde Hubbard Collection (stated on label), with his tag (typewritten on a Henry Christensen envelope).
