PUERTO RICO (under Spain), copper military token, Isabel II, undated (mid-1800s), reeded edge, very rare, ex-Roehrs. Ulex-2445; Fonrobert-7736; Eklund-2055. 14.72 grams. 35 mm. Obverse with outward-facing RL. SERVICIO DE PLAZA. surrounding central ring with crown at top; reverse with 1R CUARTO. DE 8 A 10 IZQUIERDA. * around central ring; both sides with laurel rims; reeded edge. Deep chocolate-brown AU with faint hints of luster, possibly a trial for an issue that would have had a central hole punch. This mysterious piece holds a few clues to its time period and use. First, the crown and "real servicio" legend indicate a royal military connection, while the "primer cuarto" with a range of 8 to 10 points to a security watch, like at a military post (also note that Roehrs' tag says 2 to 4 in error, indicative of a different time slot that he must have seen on another example). Finally, while the monarch is not specified on the token, it cannot be later than early 1870s because it appears in Fonrobert, which was published in 1878. Apart from a mention in a Dana Roberts group lot fifteen years ago, this is only example we have ever encountered. Pedigreed to the Edward Roehrs Collection, with his original tag and photo of a drawing of the obverse, the tag erroneously stating "2 a 4 YZQUIERDA" for reverse design.
