PUERTO RICO (under Spain), Vega Alta, brass uniface "S" token, no date (late 1800s), Hernández, "S en C," reportedly unique, ex-Roehrs. Archilla-Diez-unl; Fumero-unl. 9.38 grams. 30 mm. Fine or so, with deep olive-brown patina and moderate surface roughness, yet retaining clear incuse design elements including portions of HERNANDEZ at top and, importantly, VEGA ALTA plainly readable along the lower border. Of particular interest are the unusual central devices: underlined S EN C at top and a larger S between darts at bottom. The meaning of these letters is unknown, but other examples exist with the lower letter as A, C, or L (Archilla-Diez numbers 577-579); this appears to be the first and only known example with S. The accompanying Edward Roehrs tag incorrectly identifies the locality as Vega Baja, an evident attribution or transcription error, as the token itself clearly reads VEGA ALTA. XRF: about 79% copper, 20% zinc, 1% silver. Pedigreed to the Edward Roehrs Collection, with his tag 418.
