PUERTO RICO (under Spain), Mayagüez, copper-zinc-nickel 4 centavos token, no date (ca. 1890s), Antonio Frontera, Confitería La Bolsa, very rare, ex-Roehrs. Archilla-Diez-154 var; Fumero-68. 5.08 grams. 27 mm. Bold VF with strong peripheral legends and attractive light golden-gray surfaces with brassy stain above the 4, weak UN, overall well preserved for the type. Issued for Antonio Frontera's Confitería La Bolsa in Mayagüez (center ring reads "surtido completo de dulces y licores"), a confectionery documented as operating there by 1894. Note: Archilla-Diez lists this only in brass, while Fumero shows both brass and nickel, but XRF testing gives a reading of about 63% copper, 21% zinc, and 14% nickel. Pedigreed to the Edward Roehrs Collection, with his tag 421.
