PUERTO RICO (under Spain), Compañía de los Ferrocarriles de Puerto Rico, copper-nickel-zinc fare token, MDCCCLXXXVIII (1888), ex-Roehrs. 23.98 grams. Large token with reeded edge, hand-punched on one side with COMPANIA DE / LOS FERROCARRI / LES DE PTO.RICO above AHORRA TIEMPO (“save time”), and on the other side the date in Roman numerals with quartets of o's above and below, likely made from a contemporary medal, as suggested by the alloy and construction, and issued as a fare token for the Puerto Rico railway system, which opened in 1891, the earlier date seen here best explained as commemorative or anticipatory, tied to the concession rather than the actual operation. XRF analysis confirms a copper-zinc alloy with only minor traces of silver, consistent with base-metal token manufacture. Toned in the lettering and with light surface marks but well preserved overall. Unlisted in all token references and the first of its kind we have handled, an important relic of Puerto Rican transportation history. Pedigreed to the Edward Roehrs Collection, with handwritten collector's tag 218.
