PUERTO RICO (under Spain), Añasco, brass "5" token, no date (late 1800s), Buenaventura Íñigo, Comercio, extremely rare, ex-Roehrs. Archilla-Diez-unl; Fumero-12. 4.58 grams. 27 mm. Fine or so, with the large central 5 clear, while the opposite side is largely effaced. Even medium brown surfaces with honest circulation and some striking weakness, nevertheless identifiable as this elusive Añasco merchant issue. The word COMERCIO is very faintly visible at the center of the reverse. The issuer is historically documented as Buenaventura Íñigo, an Añasco merchant listed in the 1894 Directorio Comercial é Industrial de la Isla de Puerto Rico under the Añasco section among VENDEDORES DE VÍVERES AL POR MENOR, confirming his activity as a retail groceries and provisions dealer. Rated RRR in Fumero, the "5" token is unlisted in Archilla-Diez, whereas both references list the "10." While this piece is quite coppery in appearance, it has been XRF tested as containing about one third zinc (hence brass). Pedigreed to the Edward Roehrs Collection, with his tag 430.
