PUERTO RICO, Hacienda Luisa, paper 1 cuartilla, circa 1890s, very rare, ex-Roehrs, ex-Rudman. The Hacienda Luisa was founded in the mid-1800s by Don Francisco José Brunt Urgell who immigrated from Catalunya. He named the sugar plantation after his wife, Luisa Guayta Munté. In 1880, Don Francisco died. Eight years later, Luisa Guayta remarried local sugar proprietor Fidel Benero Rivera. In 1890, Luisa Guayta's son José Brunet Guayta took over the plantation and upgraded its machinery to vastly increase its production of brown granulated sugar. It was around this time that these notes were printed to pay the plantation workers. This uniface note, printed on green cardstock, has Hacienda "LUISA" at top and Una Cuartilla below with simple border all around. Very Fine with bold printing, very rare. Pedigreed to the Edward Roehrs Collection and to the Isaac Rudman Numismatic Cabinet.
