PUERTO RICO, Guayanilla(?), brass 10 centavos token, no date (early 1900s), Santoni y Compañía, extremely rare, ex-Roehrs. Archilla-Diez-unl; Fumero-unl. 4.58 grams. 22 mm. Medium-brown XF with strong details but obverse struck from a "sweaty" die, that side showing S & CO. in center encircled by CAFETIN • ALMACEN • PANADERIA, the reverse with large crosshatched 10 in center surrounded by GOOD FOR above and IN MERCHANDISE below. An enigmatic and rather rare Puerto Rican merchant issue attributed by Roehrs to Santoni, albeit with no place name visible on the token, and unlisted in either Archilla-Diez or Fumero. We note that a Santoni y Compañía is documented as a Puerto Rican mercantile concern in the early 1920s, owned by Domingo Santoni. Despite its coppery color, XRF shows it contains 13% zinc (hence brass). Pedigreed to the Edward Roehrs Collection, with his tag 417.
