Vives-59; Basso-703a. 42.15 grams. 48.5 mm. Obverse with bust of Charles III right, hair tied behind, engraver's signature J. GABRIEL GIL below, CARLOS III INSTITUIDOR BENEFICO around with eight-point star stops; reverse with a traditional Philippine arms, comprising a kris, kampilan, and kalasag, tied together within a laurel wreath, PREMIO DEL VALOR around and MANILA / GIL below, eight-point star stops; smooth edge. A large and impressive Mint State silver medal with bold portrait and sharply rendered reverse devices, broad fields showing scattered fine handling and adjustment lines, attractive light rainbow toning over the silver surfaces. Rare and historically important, created under royal orders of 1780 and 1781 as an award for those distinguishing themselves in the Philippines through the arts or in wartime service.
