PHILIPPINES (under Spain), Manila, large gilt-bronze medal, Charles III, no date (1782), Manila Society for Agriculture, Perfección Aumento, by J. Gabriel Gil, ex-Medina. Forrer II, p. 262; Basso (2nd ed)-701a; cf Medina-15; cf Vives-57. 45.43 grams. 49.5 mm. Obverse with bust of Charles III right, hair tied behind, CARLOS III INSTITUIDOR BENEFICO around and J. GABRIEL GIL below, eight-point star stops; reverse with plow in front of palm tree, PERFECCION AUMENTO around and MANILA / GIL below, eight-point star stops; smooth edge. Broad and impressive medal with a strongly modeled portrait and sharply rendered agricultural devices, extensive bright gilding with light friction and scattered fine handling marks in the open fields, otherwise well preserved AU+ and quite attractive. Issued as part of the early medal series associated with the Real Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País de Manila, established under Governor General José Basco y Vargas to encourage agriculture, industry and economic development in the Philippines. The contemporary description states that this type was intended to reward those who increased or improved agricultural production, including useful trees and other crops. Forrer states that the signature on reverse is for Gerónimo Antonio Gil, father and direct supervisor of J. Gabriel Gil. Important pedigree. Pedigreed to the José T. Medina Collection.
