PERU, gilt silver award medal, 1894, Club de Regatas "Lima." 25.07 grams. 38 mm. Obverse with legend JUEGOS ATLETICOS ORGANIZADOS around POR EL / CLUB / DE REGATAS / "LIMA" / [ornament] / 23 Y 30 DE / SETIEMBRE with date 1894 between rosettes at bottom; reverse with legend [rosette] LUDUS PRO PATRIA [rosette] around PREMIO / GANADO / POR above blank space where the winner's name would be inscribed. Lustrous AU+ with traces of rainbow toning, typical hairlines, integrated loop at top. The Club de Regatas Lima, founded in 1875 as a rowing club, is one of the oldest sports clubs in South America and the largest in Peru, a rare survivor of the 1879-84 War of the Pacific. "Ludus Pro Patria," which means "fight for the fatherland," is a common expression seen on sports medals for country-sponsored world athletes.
