PERU, gilt bronze oval medal with loop, 1824-dated, Bolívar / Battle of Ayacucho, by Atanasio Dávalos, NGC UNC details / cleaned. Fonrobert-9179. 11.25 grams. Obverse with uniformed bust of Bolívar, engraver's initials A D below, legend • A SU LIBERTADOR SIMON BOLIVAR•; reverse with arms of Peru, wreath above and laurel/palm branches below, inside legend • EL PERU RESTAURADO EN AYACUCHO ANO DE 1824; plain edge, with integrated loop at top. This elegant medal commemorates Bolívar's campaign in Peru, starting with the Battle of Pichincha in 1822 and ending with the Battle of Ayacucho in 1824. It was created by decree under José Maria Galdiano on February 12, 1825, for the Congress of El Peru and given to military officers for their roles in the Battle of Ayacucho, which finally ended Spanish rule in Peru. Interestingly, the H in AYACUCHO is over an erroneously punched E. Nicely struck example with bold details on the high relief bust of Bolívar, faint hairlines in fields, rare with the integrated loop at top and in this high of grade.
