PERU (State of North Peru), Lima, gold 1 escudo, 1838 M, very rare, NGC AU details / cleaned, ex-Hammel, ex-Goodman, ex-Almenara, KM Plate. KM-160; Fr-90. 3.39 grams. This is a famous little coin that once hammered for a whopping $6750 (Goodman, 1996), sneakily rare as a one-year type and very hard to find in nice grade. With muted luster graced by light red toning, well struck but noticeably hairlined, it is bettered by just two coins in the NGC census, one an AU 58 and the other UNC details. Pedigreed to the Hammel Collection (Stack's auction of September 1982, lot 906), the Goodman Collection (Superior auction of June 1996), and the Almenara Collection (stated on label), also plate coin in the various Standard Catalog references (KM).
