PERU, Republic (pre-confederation), silver uniface military award medal, no date (late 1830s), RESTAURADOR DE LA PATRIA, Felipe Santiago Salaverry, issued for the Callao uprising of 1835, extremely rare. Medina (Medallas Chilenas)-36 (p. 116, Plate IV, 5), misattributed to Chile. Hexagonal striated field within laurel wreath and elaborate six-pointed frame, legend RESTAURADOR DE LA PATRIA, fortress above, inkwell with two plumes at lower left, and armored hand holding sword at lower right; integral suspension loop above.

This is an important military decoration from the critical political and military transition immediately preceding the establishment of the Peru-Bolivian Confederation, issued during the brief government of Felipe Santiago Salaverry and associated with the pronouncement of the Callao garrison on February 23, 1835. Medina tentatively attributed this type to the Chilean capture of Valdivia based on stylistic similarities (his example fully round, not cut to the design like this one is), while Alejandro Rosa later identified it as a Peruvian award granted by Salaverry to the troops of the Callao fortresses. Extremely rare, with only about four or five examples known in silver and two examples known in gold.

Mint State with sharply struck details, very deeply toned with blue hues about the dark gray field, mint luster in center, minor hairlines, holed at top for suspension, the blank reverse quite lustrous and lightly toned in the center with dark blue around the edge. A choice example of a key historical medal.
