PERU (Republic of North Peru), Lima, 8 reales, 1839 MB, rare, NGC VF 35, ex-Almenara, ex-Sellschopp, ex-Von Schuckmann. KM-164. Well-pedigreed example with light toning over muted luster and hairlines from old cleaning, a few marks, weakly struck Liberty and top of date side. This important one-year type represents what the Von Schuckmann cataloger called "an historical anomaly," as North Peru only existed as a State and not a Republic like it is rendered in the legend. That cataloger goes on to speculate that the worn Liberty-side die might mean this was "a later symbolic issue." Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection and to the Sellschopp Collection (Swiss Bank Corp. auction of September 1988, lot 1123), both stated on label, and also to the Von Schuckmann Collection (Renaissance auction of December 2006, lot 938).
