PERU, Lima, silver medal, 1864, American Congress, by Robert Britton, NGC MS 62. Fonrobert-9137. Obverse with standing native with various symbols in center above engraver initials R.B. (R. Britten) within legend E. U. DE COLOMBIA * BOLIVIA * E. U. DE VENEZUELA * CHILE * PERU * ECUADOR * R. ARGENTIA; reverse with sunburst above names AROSEMENA / BENAVENTE / GUZMAN / MONTT / PAZ-SOLDAN / PIEDRAHITA / SARMIENTO within wreath of palm (left) and laurel (right) branches inside legend CONGRESO AMERICANO . INSTALADO EN LIMA EL DIA 28 DE OCTUBRE DE 1864 +, with engraver initials R.B. again at bottom; smooth edge. This elegant medal was created to commemorate the fourth Latin American Conference in November of 1864 in Lima, Peru, which had fruitlessly attempted to make agreements regarding intervention by (mostly) European powers. Beautiful medal struck with high relief and particularly flashy (almost prooflike) fields, quite lustrous all over, speckles of rainbow toning around the edges.
