PERU, Lima, gold cob 8 escudos, 1714/3 M, rare, NGC MS 62 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label), finest known in NGC census, ex-McGregor. S-L28; Cal-2123; KM-unl 38.2 for type); Fr-7. 26.93 grams. Good full cross-lions-castles and pillars-and-waves, both well centered on a smallish flan (still with much legend visible, somewhat reddish in toning over rather muted luster, clear overdate. Based on documentation quoted by Flemming, all Lima 1714's on the 1715 Fleet had to have come from a private merchant shipment, and are accordingly rare, with only three appearing in the NGC census (this being the finer of just two with 4/3 date). From the 1715 Fleet, with Philip Flemming photo-certificate from 2021, pedigreed to the Swiss Bank Corp. auction of September 1996 (lot 2083) and to the McGregor Collection (stated on label).
