PERU, Lima, cob 8 reales, Philip II, assayer Diego de la Torre, P-8 (open left top) to left, *-oD to right, with countermark ELH above lower left lion, ex-Ponte. S-L4; KM-14; Cal-655. 27.39 grams. Richly toned XF with full legends and inner details, no doubling and practically no weak spots, with very deep ELH countermark on cross side (trace of L from the same countermark on lower arm of cross as well, no doubt due to the countermark not being punched deeply enough to reach the field around the cross), which has been seen on only five other pieces (a Spanish proclamation medal of 1790, a US Draped Bust dollar of 1798, and three Massachusetts Bay Colony silver coins dated 1652), this being the only cob and the earliest host known, but all indicating an early U.S. application, supposedly by a collector of the time. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and to the Cayón auction of February 2017 (lot 50300).
