PERU, Lima, cob 8 reales, 1694 M, ex-Mastalir. S-L11; KM-24; Cal-599. 21.08 grams. Full pillars-and-waves with doubling in center, making the date look like "994," bold second date below most of cross, two bold mintmarks and one clear assayer, thin from corrosion, patchy toning, very rare as from a wreck just off Mar Bravo beach that long had been kept secret by locals, who avoided confiscation by melting down the coins, the silver ones becoming spoons and the gold ones (some of which were Cuzco 2 escudos!) into fake teeth. Pedigreed to the Roberto Mastalir Collection (Sedwick Auction 8, with original lot-tag 796 and photo-certificate) and to Sedwick Auction 14, with original lot-tag 474. Recovered from: Aguila Volante, sunk in 1701 off Punta Santa Elena, Ecuador
