PERU, Lima, cob 2 reales Royal (galano), 1748 V, unique, ex-Ponte, ex-Ortiz, ex-Faistauer. S-L22a; KM-unl; Cal-259. 6.58 grams. Much like the 4R 1746 above (lot 509), this superb piece is a far cry from its non-Royal contemporaries, in fact choice for any Royal, with impeccable depth and evenness of strike, its slight lack of centering on the cross side fortuitously allowing a full second date and parts of the king's name FERNANDVS, with gorgeous cabinet toning from several generations of care by famous collectors (per its pedigree), its inevitable hole at top of the pillars side no doubt inflicted well before modern appreciation (perhaps even at the moment of manufacture). In short, this is a famous and important trophy, the last date of Lima 2R Royals and one of the finest of all periods. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and to the Emilio Ortiz Collection (Swiss Bank Corp. auction of September 1991, lot 201) and to the Faistauer Collection (Christensen auction of December 1981, lot 854).
