PERU, Lima, Banco la Providencia, 1 sol, 1-1-1875, serial 41903, brown back color, with 1875 date stamp on front and back, very rare, PMG VF 25. Pick-S227a (type of). The Banco la Providencia was Peru's first private bank, established in 1862 and issuing notes first in 1863, then later in 1867 through 1877. While the obverse design of this note with vignettes of Charity and Commerce at left and caduceus at right matches the Pick catalog for Pick-S227a, the back design is brown while the Pick catalog only lists green for the back; further down, the catalog notes that archive records indicate two back color varieties for S227 and S228 (the 2 soles). This is seemingly the first issued example known with a brown color variety. The date on the note, 1-1-1875, is also not listed in Pick and is much later than the two dates given in Pick. Some modest circulation and pinholes are seen though the design on both sides is still quite bold, and a small annotation is seen in the upper left margin.
