PERU, Lima, 4 reales, Philip II, assayer R (Rincón) to left, second denomination o-iiii to right, king's name as PHILPVS, motto PL-VSVL-TR, legends HISPA / NIARVM, extremely rare, ex-Ponte, ex-Sellschopp (Plate), ex-Heiss (Plate). S-L1; KM-10.2; Cal-496. 13.33 grams. Choice example with natural surfaces showing contrasting toning, XF for wear with a few old marks, great full inner details (pillars slightly off-center) and nearly full crown and legends, bold full denomination o-iiii, a mysterious characteristic of which we know of only two other examples (same die, the pillars sides slightly different), this one heavily and desirably pedigreed, the reason for the extraneous denomination unknown but curiously appearing with the same spelling error in the king's name seen on the 8 reales (like the previous lot). Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and the Sellschopp Collection (Swiss Bank Corp auction of September 1988, lot 5), plated as coin 3 in his book Las acuñaciones de las cecas de Lima, La Plata y Potosí 1568-1651 (1971), also Plate Coin on page 49 of Grunthal-Sellschopp's The Coinage of Peru (1978), Plate Coin 13 in Alois Heiss' Descripción General de las Monedas Hispano-Cristianas (1865), and pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 18 (lot 538).
