PERU, Lima, 1 real, Philip II, assayer R (Rincón) to left, motto PL-VSVL-T below dot, legends HIS / NIARVM, NGC XF 45, "top pop," ex-Ponte. S-L1; KM-6; Cal-209. 3.17 grams. Richly toned, with full details except for just the tops of some letters of the legend, very minor doubling and minimal edge-split, interesting variety with mismatched legends lacking the letters PA. This type is notably difficult to find in numeric grade, as so many are corroded or damaged from abuse and burial, since this denomination generally stayed local to Peru; even the best Sellschopp could find is now lower grade in XF 40, whereas the present piece is currently tied with just one other for finest in the NGC census. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection (stated on label) and the Ponterio auction of March 1991 (lot 879).
