PERU, Cuzco, gold cob 1 escudo, 1698 M, extremely rare, NGC UNC details / rev scratched, ex-Caballero, ex-Almenara, Calicó Plate, Tauler Plate. S-CZ1; Cal-811; Fr-6; KM-A27. 3.35 grams. Lustrous all over, with choice full cross and date, full but slightly doubled C-castle-H, rich gold color all over, just a few peripheral scratches on the cross side but still among the nicest of only eight known examples, most of which are from the 1715 Fleet, but we cannot confirm the pedigree of this piece prior to Caballero. Pedigreed to the Caballero de las Yndias Collection (Aureo & Calicó auction of April 2009, lot 546) and to the Almenara Collection (stated on label), Plate Coin on page 243 of Calicó's Numismática española (2019) as well as on page 404 of the 2008 edition, and Plate Coin on page 94 of Tauler's Oro Macuquino (2011).
