PARAGUAY, Asunción, pattern 10 reales, 1867, very rare, NGC VF 30. Pratt-M43; KM-Pn16. Somewhat lustrous, with typical flaws and marks and overall weak strike per the type, of which only about seven examples are known outside of unpublished museum collections. As posited by Brian Boosi in a recent Collectors Universe online forum (https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1106541/the-curious-case-of-the-1867-paraguay-10-reales#latest), this coin may not be a pattern after all but instead an emergency issue from a crude mint in Luque, where the capital was transferred in 1868 after Asunción fell during the War of the Triple Alliance, particularly considering that previous patterns were of much superior quality, not to mention documentary evidence that appears to give authorization to strike coins at the new and temporary capital. If true, that would make these 10 reales officially the first locally struck "crowns" of Paraguay.
