Original (ca. 1606) large map of the Caribbean by Jodocus Hondius entitled “Cuba Insula, Hispaniola, Jamaica, Insula S. Ioannis, Margarita”. 19" x 14" map, 22½" x 18½" overall dimensions. Fine multi-panel copperplate-engraved map depicting the principal islands of the Spanish Caribbean, including Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, Puerto Rico (Insula S. Ioannis) and Margarita, accompanied by smaller inset maps and decorative cartouches. The principal panels display detailed coastlines, rivers, settlements and relief, with engraved sea pattern and ornamental title panels. Reverse with extensive Latin text headed “Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, S. Ioannis, Margarita Insulae.”

Engraved and published by Jodocus Hondius, Amsterdam, circa 1606, from the celebrated Hondius editions of the Mercator Atlas, one of the earliest widely distributed atlas series depicting the principal Spanish islands of the Caribbean during the early colonial period.

In original hand-colored condition as seen with centerfold as issued, areas of toning and staining, scattered foxing and surface discoloration. Overall a presentable early atlas map of the major islands of the Spanish Caribbean.
