Oriente, Cuba, bronze 5 centavos token, no date (1868), Esperanza V.R. & Co., NGC MS 66 RB. Rulau-Ori-78. Choice strike with satin-smooth fields displaying much original color and muted luster. The tokens for this plantation were designed by George H. Lovett, a medallist and member of the ANS. In the May 1868 issue of the American Journal of Numismatics, this series was described as having "such differences of ornamentation as to make them distinguishable by the illiterate slaves among whom they are intended to circulate, in that region of 'Hope' to their masters and none to themselves." NGC #4770986-007.
