NETHERLANDS (United), Holland, Amsterdam, "rider" ducatoon, 1673, struck with double ducatoon obverse die (HOLLAND), very rare. Delm-unl (cf 1018); Dav-unl (cf 4933); KM-unl. 31.18 grams. Already a rare two-year type (when the mint had to move from Dordrecht to Amsterdam from November 1672 to November 1673, fleeing enemy armies) with the XXX Amsterdam City arms below the crowned shield on reverse, this coin also shows an obverse legend ending in HOLLAND (as opposed to HOLL or HOL), which has only appeared on some Amsterdam piefort-style double ducatoons of the same two years. This error is not documented in any reference known to us. Broad flan with crude edges (as made), well detailed despite saltwater corrosion with full rider and clear date, a few spots of minor encrustation. Pedigreed to the Steve Valentine Collection, with original certificate from the salvor/conservator. Recovered from: Merestein, sunk in 1702 off South Africa
