Mexico City, Mexico, klippe 4 reales, 1733MF, possible obverse brockage. S-M28; KM-41; CT-1036. 11.72 grams. The obverse of this coin looks like a normal (albeit quite scarce) klippe 4 reales with bold 1733 date and mintmark-assayer oMF to left of off-center shield with nice AU details; the reverse is a different stort: The only details visible are of the obverse again in mirror image, the typical result of a striking error known as a brockage, in which a previously struck coin sticks to the die and leaves its impression in lieu of the design the die was supposed to make (in this case the reverse). The problem with this coin, however, is that the brockage (if such it is) appears to be from an 8 reales (larger features)! While it is possible the force of the brockage simply distorted the 4R features, another possibility is that an actual 8 reales on the wreck fused to this 4 reales and left its impression, the two coins having oxidized together and then separated later. Either way, a unique and fascinating piece. Note this lot is actually from the Vliegenthart shipwreck of 1735 as opposed to the Rooswijk shipwreck of 1739 as printed in the catalog.
