Mexico City, Mexico, gold cob 4 escudos, 1711 J, ornate-tressure cross, very rare, NGC MS 64 (1715 Fleet Label). S-M30; KM-55.1; Cal-unl. 13.43 grams. Superb full shield with bold full oXMJ, clear bottom part of 1711 date, double-struck cross of the "ornate tressure" type (with odd "ears" between the arms of the cross), an unlisted type in Calico but listed in Tauler as 107, lustrous and lightly toned. Also, we note this coin was lot 165 in the Schulman auction of November 27, 1972 (one of the classic Real Eight Co auctions).
