Mexico City, Mexico, cob 8 reales, 1729 R/D, extremely rare. S-M24; KM-unl (47a for type); Cal-unl. 26.29 grams. The existence of 1729 D has been contentious among researchers (in the absence of any 100% clear examples), as it is known that the changeover from D to R (ironically the same person, Rivas previously acting as assayer on behalf of the Carmelites of the Holy Desert) took place on March 17 of that year, although clear examples of 1729 R/D are already known in 4R and 2R (one each). The present discovery coin shows without doubt a full date and oMR with enough parts of an under-assayer D at the bottom of the R to attribute to R/D. Most of the shield and cross are also visible, with contrasting dark toning in crevices, but the surfaces are lightly corroded as from an unspecified shipwreck (AVF otherwise).
