Mexico City, Mexico, cob 8 escudos, 1714J, Royal-die obverse only (extremely rare), from the 1715 Fleet, encapsulated NGC MS 61. S-M30; KM-57.2 (for type); CT-unlisted. 26.9 grams. Bright butter-yellow color, choice full shield and cross, the former very crisply detailed and with small ornamental florets in the spaces as struck from a Royal die (Tauler #395a), flat and sloping peripheries as usual but quite rare and with bold date to boot. From the 1715 Fleet (stated in the slab), with certificates, and pedigreed to the Ponterio auction of April 2000, with original lot-tag #800.
