Mexico City, Mexico, cob 1 escudo, 1711J, "1712 style" reverse, Royal-like, from the 1715 Fleet, encapsulated NGC MS 65, finest known specimen in NGC census. S-M30; KM-51.1; CT-506. 3.35 grams. Unusually broad flan, nearly round and with full inner details (shield and oXMJ, cross with "ears"-style ornaments in quadrants) and bold full date, much crown and legend, lustrous and exceptional for grade, clearly a premium piece even if not a full-fledged Royal. It is interesting to note, also, that this coin features prominently in a famous photo by John De Bry of an example of a military decoration known as the Order of the Holy Spirit that HRD recovered in 1988. From the 1715 Fleet (as stated inside the slab).
