Mexico City, Mexico, 4 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer R (Latin) at bottom between pillars, motto PLVSV in rounded panel, rare, ex-Jones (Plate Coin). Nesmith-6d/6c; Cal-71 type; S-M1; KM-16. 12.42 grams. Deeply toned XF with moderate corrosion on part of the edge only (probably "Golden Fleece wreck" of ca. 1550). The shield legend retains the later type of retrograde N while the pillars legend does not. All lettering is Latin. Despite the bit of corrosion, all details are legible and well struck. Pedigreed to the Dr. Peter Jones collection, plated on page 54 of his book The First Coins of the Americas (2020).
