Mexico City, Mexico, 4 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer P to left, mintmark M to right (oPo-oMo), panel leaning left, HISPANIE, very rare, NGC AU 53, ex-Rudman. Nesmith-21; Cal-77 type; S-M4; KM-17. One of the earliest types of assayer-P coinage, the P-M in the 4 reales was unknown to Nesmith (although he gave it a number in case one was ever found). Hallmarks of its early time period are the use of K in place of H, double rondules-in-annulets as stops between words, and HISPANIE in the pillars legend. Broad flan with complete legends and choice full inner details, richly toned with hint of original luster, one of only two known for this exact die-variety and technically second finest for the type in the NGC census behind a single AU 55 (note that NGC has two categories for the same thing: "OPOOMO DOTTED CIRCLES" and "P M DOTTED CIRCLES"). NGC #4173181-022. Pedigreed to the Isaac Rudman Numismatic Cabinet. (Note: Printed catalog calls this finest known in NGC census in error.)
