Mexico City, Mexico, 1 real, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer R (Gothic) at bottom between pillars, very rare, ex-Jones (Plate Coin). Nesmith-3b for type/3b; Cal-133; S-M1; KM-7. 3.27 grams. Like all assayer-R 1R, this example contains mostly Gothic lettering with at least one exception. In this case, all the A's are crude save one in IOHA and thus you can easily compare the difference. A choice, bold XF coin with nicely contrasting toning and traces of edge-shaving which shouldn't affect its inherent value as a scarce commodity. Pedigreed to the Dr. Peter Jones collection, plated on page 57 of his book The First Coins of the Americas (2020), and to the Richard Long auction of July 2004 (lot #273).
