Medium-sized silver ingot, 164 troy oz, marked with fineness XXIII-I (XRF-tested at 95% fine) and owner/shipper diamond-topped R, ex-Maravillas (1656). 7½" x 4" x 2". Ingots from this popular shipwreck are rarely seen, and the most desirable are the ones with original pedigrees like this one, traced to the first finds by Robert Marx in 1972. On the top of this piece are just three markings: an owner/shipper mark (diamond-topped R), two hash marks (meaning unknown), and a series of engraved Roman numerals X X III - I, corresponding to about 23/24 fineness, the rounded bottom featureless (but with three small drill holes as previously mounted in a large framed display along with the accompanying catalog and plaque), all minimally pitted and well conserved. From the Maravillas (1656), pedigreed to the Schulman auction of December 1974, lot A63, with original catalog and custom plaque about the wreck and salvage.
