Medellin, Colombia, 5 decimos, 1889, "mulatto" bust with flowers, fineness 0,835, very rare, PCGS XF detail / scratch, Restrepo Plate Coin (stated on label). Restrepo-404.1; KM-unl. Nice strike with bold full details, toned all over but with dark area to left on reverse, distinctive one-year type with unusual bust and flower-and-six-leaf ornaments in legend on obverse, unique Medellin issue with proper fineness. Restrepo's theory as to why there was so much variation in design in the Medellin 5 decimos of 1887-9 is that "the engraver was sent to jail and nobody else had a good understanding of die production procedures." PCGS #39227628. Pedigreed to the Nueva Granada Collection (stated on label), and Plate Coin on page 233 of Restrepo's Coins of Colombia (2012).
