Medellin, Colombia, 5 decimos, 1886, fineness 0.500/835, no accent-mark, rare, encapsulated NGC MS 61, finest known in NGC census by several grades, ex-Whittier. With an astonishing number of different varieties featuring diverse legends, punches, edges and finenesses, this single year of this single mint was the subject of a lengthy Numismatist article by Oen Nelson (Whittier collection) that was recently redone by Antonio Pedraza. With muted satin luster and no toning, this may be the highest-grade example studied from any of the varieties; Lissner did not have any. Extremely rare quality and a most desirable example. Per the type and date (not 1886/4), this coin shows the large bust and no stars on reverse, also edge lettering DIOS PATRIA LIBERTAD. Pedigreed to the Whittier collection.
