Maracaibo, Venezuela, "imitation cob" 2 reales, date "38" (1813-14), very rare, NGC AU 55, Gibbs Plate Coin. Cal-Type 202; KM-4. 2.96 grams. Like lot 1251 above (Maracaibo royalist 1R) the attribution of this "imitation cob" 2R to Maracaibo is under debate but defensible based on the lizard-like lions in the cross. (It is worth noting that the "PMPY" imitation cobs of Honduras have similar lions and castles, and the "pine tree" tops on their pillars are similar to this issue as well.) This is a high-grade example, deeply toned over luster, with choice full cross but off-center pillars, the latter nevertheless showing bold details including 3 at top left and 2 at top right (the norm), SP-8VL-87 across middle (not the norm) and just the tops of the middle and right compartments at bottom, which appear to be the "date" 38 (probably somehow referring to 1813) and the letter P, a unique variety in any case, and with a desirable pedigree. NGC #5846728-011. Plate Coin #732A in the auction of the Howard D. Gibbs collection (Schulman New York, March 1966).
