MOZAMBIQUE (under Portugal), 8 reales, José I, MR monogram countermark (1765-67) on a Lima, Peru, pillar 8 reales, Charles III, 1764 JM, NGC XF 40, "top pop," ex-Almenara. Gomes-unl (28 for type); KM-27.2; De Mey-926. Very deeply punched complete countermark on pillars side of well-struck host, with attractive gray-gold toning over muted luster, currently tied with two others for finest known in the NGC census for Peruvian hosts. Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection (stated on label).
