MEXICO, large silver medal, Charles III, 1785, Birth of Prince Ferdinand / Corporation of Mines of New Spain, by G.A. Gil, ex-Medina. Grove-K-82a; Fonrobert-6395. 139.57 grams. 62 mm. Obverse with uniformed bust of Charles III facing right toward conjoined draped busts of Prince Charles (later Charles IV) and Maria Luisa, facing left, bust of Prince Ferdinand (later Ferdinand VII) below and facing left; reverse with miners at work near the entrance to a mine, a uniformed standing figure pointing upward under a radiant sunface, 1785 on book at lower left; smooth edge. Rare and impressive medal design featuring Spain's Royal Family at the time along with a detailed mining scene on the reverse deftly executed by Chief Engraver Gerónimo Antonio Gil. Choice AU with light cabinet rub on the high points of the design, the smooth and lustrous fields covered with vibrant rainbow toning, important pedigree. Pedigreed to the José T. Medina Collection.
