MEXICO (War of Independence), Chihuahua, bust 8 reales, Ferdinand VII, 1816 RP, struck over a cast Chihuahua bust 8 reales with T and pomegranate countermarks, very rare, NGC Shipwreck Effect (SS Central America Shipwreck Label). KM-111.1; Cal-1168; Ramírez-C8.6.1. Incredibly rare type as the first that we have offered (or even heard of) from this famous shipwreck and probably the only known Mexican War of Independence coin recovered from an American shipwreck. Nice XF with some bust detail plus bold countermarks in the fields, the legends a bit obscured due to over-striking but with a clear date, a few small as-made surface pits from the cast host coin, rather well-struck reverse with clear mintmark and assayer, surfaces with mild saltwater corrosion but still possessing great eye appeal. Recovered from: S.S. Central America, sunk in 1857 off North Carolina
