MEXICO, Mexico City, ½ real, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer Gothic R (Rincón) at bottom between pillars, mintmark m (Gothic) below KI, motto as PLVS (Gothic) in oval panel, very rare, ex-Sedwick-Downing. Nesmith-2; S-M1; Cal-41; KM-6. 1.43 grams. Among the very first coins struck at the Mexico City Mint, with all-Gothic lettering and the king’s name misspelled as KROLVS (maybe to save space?), broad flan with virtually full legends and interiors despite flat areas and some waviness, overall Fine with toning around details, an essential coin for collectors of this series, with few surviving examples. Pedigreed to the Stack's Bowers and Ponterio auction of August 2013, with original lot-tag 13273, and to the Sedwick-Downing Collection of Mexican Charles-Joanna Coinage.
