MEXICO, Mexico City, gold cob 8 escudos, (1712) (J), ornate-tressure cross, NGC MS 64 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label), finest known in NGC census, ex-Christensen. S-M30; KM-57.1; Cal-2208; Fr-6. 27.04 grams. Choice full shield with full denomination VIII to right, also choice full cross with "ears" for tressures between the ends of the cross, a variety of 1711-12 only that we call "ornate tressure" but NGC calls "bar end," this coin further attributable to 1712 by die-match with other known examples, currently the finest graded at NGC for the variety in any case (either date), beautifully toned over muted luster with peripheries typically flat (and, on the cross side, beveled as made). From the 1715 Fleet, with Sedwick photo-certificate, pedigreed to the Christensen auction of October 1964, lot 224.
