MEXICO, Mexico City, gold cob 4 escudos, 1714 J, NGC MS 64 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label), ex-McGregor. S-M30; Cal-2029; KM-55.2; Fr-7a. 13.45 grams. Lustrous and sharp, the choice grade being only half the story, as its strike is exceptional, with the nearly full and well-detailed shield just off-center enough to allow for a bold full 14 of the date while retaining a full oMJ and almost all of the denomination IIII, plus with a very choice full crown on top to boot. The perfectly centered cross-and-tressure is even better, earning this statement from Flemming: "I have never seen another Mexican media onza with [such] complete cross, fleurs and tressures." From the 1715 Fleet, with Philip Flemming photo-certificate from 2015, pedigreed to the McGregor Collection (stated on label).
